The first few times I made it through, I thought SuperGiant had done a good job with that setup, with narrative stakes that made this endless conflict of a broken immortal family poignant and futile, a true Greek tragedy that runs its inevitable course to heartache. Again, this is what the roguelike demands: an infinite narrative to accompany its infinite gameplay structure, necessarily grim because the game is built that way. You are bound to the underworld, however, and so you die moments after meeting her and are reborn in a pool of blood at the foot of your father’s throne. It takes a while to get the hang of it, but with practice and upgrades you start to get comfortable, and eventually you start breaking through the grueling boss fight at the end, emerging from the depths of the underworld to the sun-kissed seaside of mythological Greece where you find her in a little garden by a humble cottage. You are trying to meet your mother, Persephone, who fled the underworld and your titular father years ago. If you want more insight, be sure to check out what mythical poems and dead gods could tell us about the story of Hades 2.Hades is a rougelike, where you run through a similar set of procedurally-generated challenges every time only to start all over again whether you die or win, a grim marathon that, for most of the game, informs its equally grim narrative. "She plays a significant role in classical mythology surrounding Hades and the Underworld, and has been an influential and deeply compelling figure in witchcraft, myth, and folklore in a variety of cultures for thousands of years… so much so we felt we needed a whole new game to try and do her justice." "Central to this ancient and oft-feared and misunderstood practice is Hecate, the secretive goddess of witchcraft and the crossroads," Supergiant explains over on its FAQ page for Hades 2. One figure of myth, in particular, is the heart of the sequels direction: While you don't need prior knowledge of the mythology of Hades to enjoy the sequel, Supergiant shares some interesting facts about Witchcraft and how its integral to many Greek Myths – including some of the most well known myths and those that inspired Hades and Hades 2. While it is a direct follow-up to the first game, Supergiant makes it clear that you don't need to know anything about Hades or Greek mythology to get stuck into the sequel.Ī Supergiant developer recently confirmed that it is Hades chained up in the Hades 2 trailer, suggesting that his daughter will be set out to free her father from his prison and kill Chronos in the process. Escaped from imprisonment in the Underworld, Chronos now wages war on Olympus. Also set in and around Greek myth, Hades 2 centres around Chronos, the Titan of Time, who's known to be a "wicked father" to Hades and his brothers. Hades 2 is a direct sequel to the original game that is said to take place "sometime" after the events of Zagreus' Underworld escapades. This is one of many theories that I'm puzzling over as I wonder what Hades 2 might look like. In short, that the player will delve down through Hell into Tartarus from a starting point on the surface. In terms of the Hades 2 story, the trailer leads me to think that we might be undergoing a reverse version of the first game.
